It sounds like a Disney movie. A short, stocky, balding, hockey player from New Brunswick decides he would be better at baseball and ends up setting a major league home run record. He marries a girl from his hometown, they have three daughters, and he retires back to New Brunswick where he gets his dream job of coaching hockey at his old high school.
I remember pulling a Matt Stairs Expos card out of a pack of 1993 Fleer cards. I think i was 8 at the time. I thought he had a really cool name, and for some reason I just assumed he was a stud who was putting up big numbers in Montreal for the next few years. I watched him in the playoffs against the Yankees with the As in 2000, and thought, βHey Matt stairs, still out there doing his thing. How dis he end up in Oakland?β Imagine my surprise when I bought baseball cards for the first time in years and pulled him out of a 2001 Topps pack, and discovered he had spent the 90s as a journeyman, and was only now developing into the bomb blasting stud my eight year old brain had decided he was. I always had a soft spot for the guy after that, and followed the rest of his career pretty closely.
How many of the league-leading 11 triples were in home games? FNB Field (built 1987) has unusual dimensions, deeper to right-center than to center field.
Gotta love the Gator!
The 15 yo me will never believe anyone was ever a better pinch hitter than than the 1968 version of Gates Brown
