Welcome to Lost in Left Field

I’m glad you found me here. My name is Paul White, and I’ve been writing about baseball and history for as long as I can remember, so I decided to start this newsletter that combines the two. There are times I’ll write about something current that’s happening in baseball but typically I’m focused on the game’s rich history, which seems to have an endless supply of great stories that can be told. Or re-told in some cases, hopefully with a slightly different spin of point of view.

Since I live in Kansas City, one thing you’ll find here a lot is coverage of the people and events of the Negro Leagues. Not exclusively, and not even predominantly, but will the regularity that they deserve. My interest in the Negro Leagues led to my first book, COOPERSTOWN’S BACK DOOR; A HISTORY OF NEGRO LEAGUERS IN THE BASEBALL HALL OF FAME, which will be published by McFarland this Fall. I really enjoyed that project, because I got to blend the history of the Negro Leagues with the history of the Hall of Fame, and lay out the fascinating intersections between the two.

That’s pretty typical of what I do here. I look at a bit or two of the game’s history, find the connections, and then lay that out for the folks who decide to read along with me. If that sounds like something you’d find interesting, then this is the place for you.
