The comments section can be a bit of a mixed bag.
Generally, it’s wonderful. Folks get to provide you with instant feedback, good or bad, and that’s important. It helps guide where I’m going with this thing, and either stay the course or make corrections as needed.
At times the Well Actually Brigade will make an appearance, and that’s not great but it’s fine. Like most people on Substack, I’m working without a net, a.k.a. an editor, so there will obviously be some typos, misstatements, or just plain mistakes from time to time. When that happens, the folks who seem to thrive on pointing those things out serve a valuable purpose. It’s certainly not as fun as reading about how much someone loves your latest effort, but it’s necessary.
I’ve been fortunate so far and haven’t run into anyone abusive or contrarian. Well, one guy decided to tell me I was purposely lying to readers because I didn’t make it clear in one edition that Negro Leagues stats can be incomplete, as if I haven’t noted that repeatedly or written an entire book in which I covered that subject in depth. But, oh well, that’s what the mute function is for.
On Friday, the usually wonderful aspect of the comments section won out again, as it typically does. I posted my usual Friday Stuff edition, and no less than two-time Pulitzer Prize winner provided this wonderful contribution regarding the section about Dale Long and his unlikely 8-game homer streak:
