The Athletic's All-Quarter Century Team

Last week, The Athletic posted their All-Quarter Century Team for the first 25 years of the 21st century. Before digging into that, I think it’s fair to note that we haven’t had a full 25 years of this century yet. Yes, it’s now 2025, but we don’t start counting years at zero. We start at one, which means the first season of this century was 2001, not 2000. And that means only the 2001-2024 seasons are complete.

That matters, as you’ll see in a minute, because there are active players on the list or in contention for a spot on it, but they’ve been shorted over half a season. Will that matter? I don’t know, but at the rate someone like Aaron Judge is hitting this season, there’s a good argument to be made that he should be on the list if we’d waited until after the season to create it.
