This was the anniversary of shortstop Dick Lundy’s death in 1962. Other than amongst Negro Leagues historians and aficionados, Lundy isn’t talked about much, but he was an all-time great player. How great? Well, in his twelve known major league seasons, played mostly with the Atlantic City Bacharach Giants but also a few other squads, Lundy had the following 162-game averages:

197 hits, 56 extra-base hits, 117 runs scored, 125 RBI, 19 steals, 5.9 WAR, and a batting line of .331/.394/.477.

That’s, uh, good. Like really, really good. Like so good that in the history of baseball, only three shortstops have ever played at least 500 games and had a career batting average of at least .320, and a career on-base percentage of at least .380, and a career slugging percentage of at least .450.

  1. Hall of Famer Honus Wagner.

  2. Hall of Famer Willie Wells.

  3. Dick Lundy.
