A few weeks ago, when Vlad Guerrero, Jr. started openly talking about his contract negotiations with the Blue Jays, I wrote that it seemed he was aiming awfully high and it wouldn’t surprise me if he found himself traded before the deadline this summer. This was about a month after I rang a different warning bell about signing Guerrero to an expensive long-term deal because he had a lot of similarities to Orlando Cepeda, a fabulous player who nonetheless didn’t have a very productive second half to his career, at least compared to his early years.
So, of course, Guerrero and the Blue Jays just reached agreement on a 14-year, $500 million contract extension that will keep him in Toronto until he’s 40.
