I get to write about anything I want, and that’s both a blessing and a curse at times. On the one hand, there’s no boss telling me what to do, and no editor dictating subjects or re-writing paragraphs. On the other hand, it’s all on me. Every idea, word, and typo is my responsibility. Sometimes I pick a dud subject, or execute it poorly, or both, and I have no one to blame but myself.
That can be a daunting thing at times, but thankfully I’ve settled on a general theme - baseball history - that is both deep and broad, virtually guaranteeing I won’t run out of material. Sure, I might pick a topic readers don’t find as interesting as I do, or I may write badly about it, but at least I’ll always have a chance to do better the next day. It’s like a baseball season in that way, only not limited to a league schedule. Here, if I want, there will always be another game tomorrow.
With pretty much anything baseball-related to choose from, narrowing down the possible subjects is the bigger problem at times. I haven’t really limited myself beyond 1.) baseball, and 2.) history, so I’ve got at least a couple hundred years of subject matter to sort through each day. I’ve been lucky so far and haven’t felt the need to limit it further than that, with the exception of setting one hard and fast rule for myself.
No politics, no religion.
