Baseball Remembers: Mark Buehrle
Why am I using a Baseball Remembers edition to write about a player who only retired ten years ago and is currently on the BBWAA ballot for the Hall of Fame? Excellent question, I’m glad you asked.
The answer is pretty straightforward; Too many people have seemingly forgotten how good Mark Buehrle was. Specifically, there’s a sizable number of people who apparently believe Andy Pettitte was better. That’s been the commentary online whenever I’ve seen a Hall of Fame voter tick the box for Pettitte and not Buehrle, and that’s the history of their respective vote totals, too. Buehrle arrived on the ballot in 2021, two years after Pettitte, and he’s been outvoted by Pettitte every single year.
2021: Pettitte 55, Buehrle 44
2022: Pettitte 42, Buehrle 23
2023: Pettitte 66, Buehrle 42
2024: Pettitte 52, Buehrle 32
2025: Pettitte 110, Buehrle 44
Pettitte more than doubled Buehrle last year, and so far this year, according to Ryan Thibodaux’s invaluable ballot tracker, he’s taken an enormous leap to over 50% of the public ballots that have been revealed, while Buehrle remains stuck in the low 20s.
And that’s just wrong.
